Walking in any direction in a virtual environment is now possible with Virtuix Omni
Virtuix unveils prototype of an omnidirectional treadmill that allows the user to walk in any direction within a virtual world.
Virtual reality headsets, along with motion detection, have brought unprecedented realism to virtual immersive environments… But would a space dive be possible in which we could walk? This has been the objective with which it has just presented itself Virtuix Omni.
This prototype is an omnidirectional treadmill that allows the user to walk in any direction within a virtual world. This opens up interesting applications in areas such as tourism, Sport or Advocacy… recreating a virtual displacement on a real surface.
Virtuix's design is based on a surface that detects the pressure of the shoe on it, transmitting speed and direction to the system to which it is connected to simulate movement.
A waist-high ring allows the wearer to stay in a central position and detect the direction in which they are walking.
The device is not yet intended to reach a mass market as it is not a plug-n-play device (requires add-ons such as Kinect, Wireless controllers… ), and requires creative developers to create interesting applications.
Virtuix recently gained attention with another development, the Rift Oculus virtual reality glasses. Is, basically, a screen split in two and adapted to a device that attaches to the user's head and detects their movements in three dimensions. Each part of the screen emits a slightly different signal, but the user sees only one image when they have it on.
