Installed in the highest-traffic areas of the Canadian island of Montreal, screens 84 integrated in the new digital urban furniture developed by Quebecor Media for the Montreal Transport Society (Stm) offers all kinds of information to its citizens and visitors with a simple movement by the user's hand, acting as a wireless mouse.

The screens integrated into the new bus canopies feature gesture recognition technology, so that the user just has to move his hand to see the information he wants (news, transport schedules, weather forecast, Maps, cultural and leisure activities, announcements, Etc.) and the pointer scrolls across the screen to the exact spot.

As Claude Foisy has pointed out, vice president of Quebecor Media, demonstrating how these screens work, "The goal of these smart bus stops is to improve the experience of STM customers and travelers, while reinforcing us as a company of innovative outdoor digital media to help advertisers reach their target audience in a more effective and impactful way".

These smart canopies, who began to settle down last September, will unfold all over the island of Montreal, which will mean around forty interactive large format displays integrated into this new urban furniture. For Robert DePatie, CEO of Quebecor Media, "this project is based on our culture of innovation and our strong relationship with Quebecers, that will benefit both public transport users, visitors and advertisers alike".

Technology platform

Quebecor Media MontrealThe digital signage systems specialist Manufacturing Resources International (Mri) has been the company selected to supply the outdoor LCD digital displays that are integrated into the new urban furniture. specifically, this is the BoldVu model of this North American supplier, they offer 2.000 brightness nits and support direct sunlight.

These high-definition, vertical format digital systems are fully sealed to prevent dust or elements that damage their operation, IP65 protection to withstand temperature changes of up to 45oC and -26oC.

In addition to agreements with advertisers, the updating of the media and contents of this technology platform also corresponds to Quebecor Media, as Michel Labrecque has explained, chairman of the STM board of directors: "this long-term agreement is the result of a call to market that has had a rigorous selection process, achieved by Quebecor Media, who will be in charge of replacing our canopies and their maintenance, in addition to making travelers and visitors better informed, while increasing our non-tariff revenue by collaborating with our Transgesco business division".
