IoE will increase the efficiency of governments and improve services to citizens, according to Cisco
Thanks to the Internet of Everything, Public Administrations can obtain great benefits and save 682 billion dollars in the next ten years with applications that manage processes such as internal transport, treatment of chronic diseases, distance training or forest fire prevention, according to a Cisco study.
The Internet of Everything (IoE) could generate 4,6 trillions of dollars in the public sector over the next ten years, according to the study he made public Culm during the last edition of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2014), that has been held from 7 to the 10 in Las Vegas. That figure would be achieved through savings, Increased efficiency, the generation of new income (without increasing taxes) and improving benefits for citizens.
The IoE is the networking of people, Processes, Data and Objects, and the increase in added value that occurs when everything is connected. Various technology transitions, including the Internet of Things, Increased mobility, The emergence of cloud computing and the growing importance of big data, combine to make the Internet of Everything possible.
Over the next decade, cities in various parts of the world have the potential to benefit from the 1,9 trillions of dollars that the IoE would contribute, according to Cisco study, And the way to capture much of this value is by implementing applications.
Smart buildings could save 100 billion dollars by reducing operating costs resulting from reducing energy consumption through the integration of heating, ventilation and air conditioning.
Gas monitoring could save 69 billion dollars by reducing the cost of meter reading and increasing their accuracy.
Smart parking could save 41 billion dollars by providing real-time information on available parking spaces in the city. Residents can identify and reserve the nearest available space, traffic officers can easily locate the misuse of spaces and municipalities can define parking prices based on demand.
Water management could save 39 billion dollars by connecting the water meter of homes through an IP network to provide remote information on the use and status of the pipe.
Road tolls could generate 18 billion dollars thanks to automatic payment, improving traffic conditions and increasing revenues.
“With the large number of citizens who commute daily to urban centers, Cities need to be more flexible and adapt to their needs”, says Wim Elfrink, Executive Vice President, Cisco Industry Solutions. “The Internet of Everything is transforming the way cities deliver services and how citizens interact with public administration.”
A saving of 682.000 million dollars with IoE
Beyond the cities, the benefits of the Internet of Everything extend to almost all levels of Public Administrations, since according to the study the states have the possibility of obtaining savings of 682 billion dollars by implementing IoE solutions that manage processes such as internal transportation, treatment of chronic diseases, distance training or forest fire prevention.
For its part, Civil protection agencies could get 472 billion dollars in savings through IoE solutions that would improve disaster response, Fleet Management & Cyber Security, among other areas.
Defence Forces globally would improve the effectiveness of military missions through secure information sharing and interconnection between soldiers, Bases,Vehicles and equipment. Optimizing global Defense Forces communications could generate 1,5 trillion dollars, in addition to the notable increase in security for soldiers.
“Public sector leaders are under tremendous pressure to bridge the gap between citizens' expectations and shrinking resources”, says Martin McPhee, Cisco Senior Vice President for Consulting Services. “IoE solutions have the potential to change everything, so that public administration must act to identify the main opportunities for its application and begin to discover what is possible in an IoE-centric world “, adds the executive.
The city of Barcelona has applied the IoE to offer citizens new services and a better experience in their relationship with the City Council. As one of the first cities to develop virtual services for citizens, Barcelona uses video and collaboration technologies so that citizens can interact with the City Council without having to travel to municipal offices.
Become one of the world's best examples of interconnected smart communities, Barcelona has implemented IoE solutions for water management, Parking, waste management and bus lines. All of them are helping the city to save and improve the quality of service to its citizens.
