The present and future of compression technologies has been the theme of the seminar held by Tmediat and Ateme at the headquarters of Televisió de Catalunya. An event in which HEVC, IPTV and OTT have been the main protagonists and where experiences made in ultra high definition have been shown, such as the Sochi project, the World Cup 2014 or the Roland Garros tournament.

The day 11 In June, the seminar on compression technologies and their applications was held at the headquarters of Televisió de Catalunya, convened by Tmediat and Ateme. The seminar began by going over the basics of MPEG coding, comparing them with those corresponding to MPEG2, and showing the advantages it offers. The difference between coding and 8 and 10 Bit, and it was technically justified why the use of 10 bits does not increase bandwidth consumption. A continuación se mostró la procedencia de la latencia en los procesos de codificación.

El siguiente tema que se abordó fue la comparación entre IPTV y OTT, las diferencias entre los modelos operativos sobre redes gestionadas y no gestionadas, y la necesidad del streaming adaptativo y su impacto en la provisión de servicio por parte de los operadores de telecomunicaciones.

Tmediat and Ateme Workshop on TelevisioEl tercer panel, el más esperado en opinión de algunos, giró en torno al codificador de próxima generación HEVC. Se repasó el estatus del estándar y su definición así como sus beneficios y aplicaciones. Special attention was paid when commenting on the experiences carried out in the Roland Garros tournament, where Ateme participated in an experimental broadcast in HEVC in 4K from start to finish.

The fourth point of the program was dedicated to the latest news on content contribution from two points of view: Contribution by satellite and through unmanaged networks. In the first of them, the different DVB-S2 standards were discussed., DVB-S2+, DVB-S3; while the second explained the benefits provided to the user by the use of this technology such as having an integrated solution with low level of investment and operating costs. Para terminar se comentaron las participaciones de Ateme en los eventos de Sochi y en el Campeonato Mundial de Futbol en Brasil y porqué el H264 es válido para transmisiones en 4K.

El evento finalizó con una comparativa entre codificación MPEG4 y HEVC a diversos bit rates en el que participaron activamente los asistentes, identificando cada uno de los formatos y solicitando los correspondientes cambios de anchos de banda en cada uno de ellos.
