Telefónica shows in Barcelona the operation of its IoT Smart City platform
This data generated by 'the city' in different formats and sources is opened so that entrepreneurs and developers can use it for a wide variety of purposes, becoming a great laboratory for the promotion of entrepreneurship. The use of open standards allows these initiatives to be incorporated as new services to citizens.
The platform integrates the Open Data open data portal, which makes available to society the data managed by the local administration. Any citizen or company can analyze, reuse and redistribute this data, generating new services and allowing the public administration to be more transparent (Open Government) and fosters wealth generation through the wise use of resources (Smart Government). At the Telefónica stand, the visitor has been able to learn about the operation of a real Open Data portal such as the one in Valencia.
Smart City
Telefónica offers two different visions of a smart city: that of the City Council, as responsible for the proper functioning of municipal services, and that of the citizen, as a beneficiary and active subject, since in this model of organization it also becomes a collaborator of the consistory contributing its own initiatives and suggestions for improvement.
Telefónica's stand has shown the operation of the executive dashboard, from which solutions related to energy efficiency and sustainability are implemented and managed, mobility, Tourism and citizen participation.
To ensure that a local administration is efficient, it is essential to implement telemetry and remote management in many of the services. In this way, For example, the costs of public lighting can be reduced by up to 25%, with Smart Lighting solutions or obtain similar savings in water consumption with Smart Metering applications. Also the intelligent management of sewers and urban waste (Waste management) Reduces some budget items of the municipalities.
In addition, to get the most out of these remote management solutions, Telefónica is exploring different types of connectivity technologies, in a complementary way to the cellular, as is the case with Narrowband IoT, focused on adapting devices to the needs of customers' Internet of Things customers. This connectivity allows for high battery durability, Cost appropriate to the specific use case, High coverage and indoor penetration.
In this sense, Telefónica has presented at the stand several services that can improve its performance thanks to this technology, as is the case of sewers and especially Smart Water Metering, where it has already launched commercial pilots offering telemetering in residential water meters.
