The 'The Voice' program’ Ukraine bets on Robe's lighting
As a key part of the retransmission carried out in full confinement and with all the protections established, a spectacular lighting system was designed, based on MegaPointe and Spikies luminaires from this manufacturer.
The COVID-19 pandemic has not prevented celebration, before the de-escalation process, holding the programme competition The voice of Ukraine, which was broadcast live from the Kiev studios of the TV channel 1+1, produced by Volodymyr Zavaduyk, directed by Tri.Direction and illuminated by Eugene Kostyra, with cinematographer Sergey Petrov.
To create an original and spectacular lighting design for this television and socially distant event, Eugene Kostyra used Steal MegaPoints and Spikies as a key part of your lighting equipment, supplied like the rest of the equipment for this design, by the Ukrainian rental and production company Alight.
In this special edition of the popular program, the tenth to be held in Ukraine and in which Kostyra has been involved in lighting design since the fifth season, the scenario was based on clean lines and geometries, with a large central staircase of 3 meters high, with Led screens around the base, to which more visual systems were added in a curve around the back and sides of the studio.
Lighting design keeps this accuracy clean, accentuating the cube shape and the relationship between the different areas of the screen, since by varying the content of visual systems, the atmosphere of the set could change completely for each participant.
Originally the set had been designed for a final montage of The Classical Voice that included a significant live audience., However, Ukraine – like most of the world – was in confinement, its leaders decided to go ahead without an audience. That's why, the set was adapted for contestants, technical equipment and production personnel maintain safety and social distancing rules.
The twenty contestants were divided into four teams, each of them led by one of the four coaches. Some of the finalists were citizens of other countries who could not attend due to the confinement, and participated via live video.
Kostyra used 42 Robe Spikies mounted in a vertical lattice between the rear Led screens to create intense and precise lightning effects; along with 25 MegaPoints located on the aerial platform along with several 5 Led panel luminaires×5.
"MegaPointes and Spikies systems bring diversity and many creative options to a show like La Voz., which implies the expression of styles and moods of so many different musical genres- assures this expert-. I needed as many tools at my fingertips as possible to be able to match the vibe of each song and instantly enhance the drama and atmosphere as the director demanded.".
The programming and execution of all the lighting was carried out in a grandMA3 console of MA Lighting. "Everyone was impressed with the results.. We create a unique and special show, and the lighting design was flexible and functional, while conveying an atmosphere of self-isolation", remember Kostyra.
Working on a 'live' TV show in the midst of a global pandemic required some adaptations in its preparation and execution.. All the progress, including working with other teams, was carried out through the videoconferencing platform zoom. During rehearsals, the temperature of all those present in the study was taken, in addition to using protective equipment, including masks and gloves.
The number of people under study was also reduced, so that the technical service teams worked in shifts while they changed and prepared each performance. None of these restrictions visually affected the way the final product was displayed on television screens., offering an exciting competition to spectators.
