Pixel Artworks and TiMax in San Miguel Cave

Pixel Artworks has carried out an immersive experience in the cave of San Miguel that has included a spatial audio solution controlled by TiMax SoundHub. These technologies have been part of the visual spectacle formed by cartographic projection images.

The St. Michael's Cave is made up of a network of rocky caverns located in the Rock of Gibraltar nature reserve at an altitude of more than 300 meters above sea level. Recently, Pixel Artworks has had an immersive experience helped by TiMax for the audio solution.

The spectacular mixed-media spectacle, Created in the depths of the caves themselves, traces the formation of Gibraltar, centered on the rock itself. The ambitious project was commissioned by WrightTech Media, a local digital marketing solutions company.

Seeing the final project before the attraction's opening in June, the director of WrightTech Media, Christian Wright, underscored the dimension that audio adds to the visual element of the project. “The lighting and projection are amazing, But audio takes it to another level. There has never been anything like it in Gibraltar”.

The sound aspect of the project was specified and installed by Dan Roncoroni, of Raven AV, who worked with content producers, Zelig Sound, to create the emotional soundtracks that accompany the video content. Dan advised Zelig on the styles of content that would work most effectively through the cave network.

The audio content was divided into zones to highlight and focus on individual features of the cave, like a huge area of stalactites that resembles an angel with outstretched wings.

“A spatial audio processor was needed that could treat these areas independently while still allowing content to flow through all of them based on signals. TiMax was the only solution capable of doing so”, explains Dan Roncoroni.

TiMax outputs through Dante to a total of 35 Speakers EM Acoustics in the five areas of the attraction. Zone one houses 16 EM Acoustics EMS61 and three subwoofer units S12, while the four smaller zones feature an S12 subwoofer and EMS41 each one.

EM Acoustics provided weatherproof versions of their standard speakers to ensure they would last in the difficult space that the cave presented.

The system is Dante-based with installation amplifiers Linea Research in the rack and amplifier room Mezzo of Powersoft located inside the waterproof projector enclosures. Supplementary inputs to TiMax are provided by the media server Disguise, also through Dante.

A show controller Medialon talk to TiMax, Alerting you to every CUE activation.

Additional TiMax tickets have been enabled for on-site events, with programming accessible via a Medialon-controlled display that allows projectors and lighting to be switched to a state of ambient beauty and TiMax to background music mode.
