Interactive augmented reality for real-time dynamic video calls
The technology group Goal (Facebook) is developing real-time augmented reality tools to integrate them within video calling software and improve the collaboration experience.
Through the so-called group effects, new experiences of augmented reality that can help participants in real time in a video call, Meta is developing tools to integrate into the software to offer a more immersive and engaging way of connecting.
This is how he explained it Maher Saba, Vp. of remote presence in Meta, in an article in which he analyzed the possibilities that augmented reality technology can bring to video calls, video conferencing and collaboration.
"Activate an AR effect on a screen, transforming and interacting with that effect between screens and people in a video call is a new experience that creates a shared connection.. It's the feeling we get when we're in the same room with other people., seeing something develop before our very eyes".
Unlike the AR effects developed so far, which have largely been one-way transmissions, these new real-time interactive effects for video calls allow people to truly connect "to enable more dynamic experiences with interactive and instant AR technology in smaller groups.".
Although the director of Meta estimates that it is still early to achieve it, "It will help people feel more comfortable turning on their cameras and encourage them to connect., while interactive layers will be a new normal. In the future, AR will be one reason why people will make video calls as a priority.".
As Saba adds, "Video calls have become an integral part of our lives, but they often make us want more of the connection we get when we spend quality time with people in the same physical location.. Real-time AR can help close that gap, and while nothing can replace meeting in person, we can help people feel close".
While this new advance in the application of AR arrives "that takes us beyond the asynchronous capture of short videos to real-time interactions that improve the way people connect, we're excited to see what else lies ahead, like our smart glasses".
