Brainstorm completes the European mixed reality project AdMiRe
This R&D project, funded by the European Commission and coordinated by Brainstorm, has developed and validated mixed reality solutions that allow the remote audience to participate in TV programs as if they were on site.
With the participation of technology companies, universities and televisions, Brainstorm, specialized in real-time 3D graphics solutions, virtual studios and augmented reality, has coordinated the European project Admire (Advanced MIxed Realities) funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Programme 2020.
"The project focuses on developing and validating mixed reality solutions that increase audience interest and participation in TV shows., as well as in the generation of more attractive content", Says Francisco Ibanez, Brainstorm R&D project manager and AdMiRe coordinator.
Successfully completed after correctly validating the solution developed in the three participating televisions: NRK (Norway), TVR (Romania) and Premier Media (Ireland), the project is based on a simple App, developed jointly by the Pompeu Fabra University (Spain) and Brainstorm, that installed on the mobile, tablet or laptop allows the audience to capture their own image and send it to the AdMiRe servers.
It is in these teams where it is extracted from the background and inserted into the real or virtual scenario, together with the presenters or with the rest of the participants of the program, using for this purpose the graphical solution of Brainstorm InfinitySet and the background and super resolution extraction modules developed by the EPFL University in Switzerland.
The result of all this is that the person who has carried out this process can participate remotely in the television programs as if they were physically on the set..
As he stresses Javier Montesa, Technical coordinator of the project, "AdMiRe incorporates very innovative capture technologies, Video processing and streaming, as well as super resolution and background subtraction, to bring the audience closer to the television sets, as realistically and simply as possible, through the use of mobile devices".
Unlike the current technique, that allows remote participation in television programs through a video, AdMiRe has achieved the perfect integration of a viewer or any remote participant in the scene, as if I were physically in it, generating an optimal visual perception by the audience.
In addition, AdMiRe also allows broadcasters to save costs when it comes to bringing collaborators and guests to programs, thereby supporting green policies (Green Deal) of the European Commission, which constitutes one of the most valuable contributions of the project.
Francisco Ibáñez assures that with this project "Brainstorm has taken the first step towards the future remote production of television programs, And it does so by integrating presenters into the same program, Guests and collaborators from different parts of the planet, interacting and participating as if they were all physically together, in a way practically imperceptible to the viewer".
Brainstorm has also integrated and validated AdMiRe alongside the creative platform Disguise (United Kingdom) for studies of extended reality (Xr) based on Led screens (more data in Digital AV). The entire validation process has been designed and developed by the Norwegian university NTNU, whose results can be consulted in this link.
