Orlando Experiential Media Environment AirportWith the aim of offering a unique travel experience, creative and innovative, the initiative Experiential Media Environment (Eme), carried out in the so-called South Terminal Complex (STC) of the Orlando International Airport (MCO, in the U.S.), combines numerous visual and interactive technological systems that make the traveler's stay much more pleasant.

The EME project at Orlando's Terminal C is the first installation of digital public art in an airport environment, in which the passenger's relationship is fostered during their stay and flight waits with visual and interactive spaces, created with stunning digital canvases within architectural structures.

For development, in the EME project, a multidisciplinary team of companies have collaborated with the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, how Burns Engineering, Gentilhomme Studio, Sardi Design, MRA International Group, Electrosonic, Smart Monkeys and so on.

An interactive oasis as a welcome

Moment Vault, Windows on Orlando and Portal, are the names of these spaces, each with its own visual identity, of sound and interactive content, custom created and focused on the rich ecosystem of Florida's landscapes and culture, "to offer lasting and memorable connections with passengers, with an engaging narrative approach for travelers of all ages, which also creates additional tourism and advertising revenue opportunities".

To create this 360º interactive environment in high resolution, that exceeds the 361 square meters of Led panels, has been used Unreal Engine of Epic Games, to show from underwater manatees swimming in crystal clear rivers to mass bird migrations over Orlando's vast, lesser-known ranches, as well as the skyline of the city center.

specifically, the space Portal start the experience in the arrival hall through 32 screens in curved format and suspended in a helical frame, whose synchronized content plays in 12K in 26 Capsules (of 125 minutes) visually showing the transformation of the Central Florida region, that ranges from its springs and ranches to the beginnings of Disney studios and entertainment for all.

For its part, Windows on Orlando is made up of three large widescreen displays, with a size of 10 meters high by 30,4 long, offering stunning images of Florida in 20 Capsules (79 minutes) with cinematic quality, thanks to the use of a camera Blackmagic 12K Super 35 Hd.

Among them stands out a shocking rocket launch sequence, filmed from a NASA building in the Kennedy Space Center, as well as another of the fields in which the cowboys gather the cattle.

Located in the Airside Hub, Moment Vault offers a 360º experience in a great 15K digital canvas, consisting of 23 Capsules (109 minutes), in which travelers are placed within the animated images thanks to 3D motion sensors and cameras to enjoy games in a lake with bioluminescent fish or even step on the red earth of Mars.

Digital signage to guide travelers

The digitization project of Terminal C is completed with the installation of more than a thousand high-definition monitors connected to the network to guide travelers along their journey through it, from the moment they arrive at the airport and to the boarding gate, with flight messages, airlines and services.

To this is added a queue management system, that constantly monitors the influx that is generated in the security control and shows on the screen both the waiting time and the latest airport requirements to pass it without problems.

For this project, designed and integrated by Burns Engineering, are used passive optical network systems, with a centralized design in the deployed fiber optic network that is monitored in a dedicated IT and communications room.

As he points out Gregory Spence, Burns Engineering Project Manager, "the traveler experiences everything Orlando has to offer as soon as they arrive at Terminal C. Our team was honored to realize the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority's vision for a truly extraordinary passenger experience.. The result is definitely not the typical airport terminal, with technologies that make users' journey easier, entertaining them from start to finish".
