the Stephen F State University. Austin has created a new recording studio at the School of Music, with a console Solid State Logic System T S500 of 64 dimmers and an immersive monitor setup 7.1.4.
Study B, which opened in January in time for the start of the current semester, is located in a recently completed expansion of the Griffith Fine Arts building that houses the sound recording technology programs, my e, theatre, University Dance & Music.
The new System T, supplied by Vintage King, features an S500 console from 64 attenuators and 4,5 Integrated bays with a range of I/O SuperAnalogue network including A32 and dual SB i16 interfaces. In addition, The outer frame contains a module SSL Ultraviolet EQ Series 500.
James F. Adams, Associate Professor of Music and Director of Sound Recording Technology at the School of Music, explains that the school's Studio A is an all-analog room. “But we wanted Studio B to be more modern. We also have a graduate program, So we knew we needed to be ahead of the curve for tomorrow's professionals. We also wanted it to be an Atmos room.".
The Control Room of Studio B, which measures approximately 122 square meters, it is attached to a live room with a single ISO booth for vocals and solo instruments.
System T Platform
There were several reasons behind the school's decision to install the System T digital production platform in Studio B, Adams continues, one of which was the university's previous experience with an AWS 948 console and SSL service support. "The whole team is very responsive and provides prompt support. This is something really important for a state institution like ours.".
In addition, the features and functionalities of the System T are adapted to the needs of the teaching staff of the School of Music.
"It's designed for music, So their ability to track and do post-production mixes very easily was very important to us. We also found that SSL flow and routing (all things System T) It fits our pedagogical styles and our goals. In addition, is a native Dante console with built-in control of the stage boxes. We don't have to leave the console to go to Dante Controller to perform our terminations, You can do everything from your console. All of our facilities have a Dante backbone, so it made sense.".
Since the room was recently completed, Adams and the Sound Recording Technology program staff are just beginning to familiarize themselves with the System T's powerful features.
“We've recorded and done some basic mixes, But most of all, we've been getting to grips with the console and preparing for this semester”, Adams says. "One of the really powerful things about the console is that we can set up templates for a variety of situations to get students off to a good start. We've created a follow-up template, a split console template for DAW playback while tracking, and then we have a mixing template for when they just use Pro Tools as a tape deck in the system”.
Adams was impressed with the built-in DSP and says: "I was impressed with the processing power of the System T. SSL did a great job of making it a powerful and flexible system for us to do our essential processing. The way it integrates is very intuitive and very flexible. We have experimented with the bus compressor 7.1.4 (In fact, All the dynamics) And we've been getting into effects processing.".
Since the school's new facilities incorporate a comprehensive Dante network, there will be opportunities in the future to expand the applications for which System T is used, Adams says. "The plan is that one day our orchestra upstairs will get everything into the System T and be able to manage a live broadcast mix, in addition to recording it.. We also have a good sized show theatre where we have touring performances. We're integrated with that facility.".
